There are times when you can get rid of lice and nits just by using a lice comb. That’s when your kid is mildly affected with the condition. Comb his/her hair with the lice comb for 2-3 weeks in the morning and evening. In fact, almost all of the other lice treatments rely on suffocating the lice to death. You find over the counter medications that contain chemicals. But these chemicals can be allergic to some people. Hence, you have to consult a qualified healthcare provider if you decide to use chemical lice treatments on the market.
But you don’t have to rely on these over the counter lice treatments that contain chemicals. There are numerous home remedies that are quite effective in destroying the lice and nits. They are not harmful to your kid or the environment. Oil treatment is one of the most effective home remedies to kill head lice. There are many oils that can be used for this treatment method. You need a lice comb and some kind of oil to implement this treatment method.
First, coat the hair with almond or olive oil. Some people have found success with coating the lice comb instead of the hair. Hence, you can use whatever works best for you. You should avoid using Vaseline and Mayonnaise since they are too messy and difficult to wash out. Separate the hair into sections by using hair clips to keep them separate. Comb each section of the hair with the lice comb. Rinse the comb under running hot water after each combing. Once the combing is completed, use a regular shampoo to rinse the hair. Wash all the towels and clean the lice comb by soaking it for 15-30 minutes in a 10% bleach solution. Follow this treatment method on a daily basis for one to two weeks for best results.
There are many essential oils that are effective in destroying lice and nits. You can use these oils with the combing method explained earlier. But you need to test the essential oils on your kid by applying a drop on the back of his/her hand. Most kids can develop allergic reactions to some of these oils, especially tea tree oil. Tea tree, neem, lavender, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, nutmeg, and peppermint are some of the most effective oils in this regard. Mix two ounces of olive oil with ten drops of your preferred essential oil. Use a cotton ball to apply the oil to the scalp. Leave this solution for 1-2 hours before using the combing method to get rid of the head lice.
